Crews battle large fire on rural property east of Calgary

WATCH ABOVE: A small grass fire northeast of Calgary quickly intensified, and eventually destroyed several buildings and vehicles on a farm. Global’s Tracy Nagai reports – Mar 29, 2016

Fire crews from Rocky View County were called to a large fire on a rural property near Balzac that destroyed several buildings shortly after noon on Tuesday.

Airdrie and Beiseker RCMP closed an area along Range Road 281 between Township Road 252 and Highway 564. Fire crews from Langdon, Beiseker and Airdrie were called to try and stop the spread of the fire.

Witnesses reported seeing several pockets of flames on the property, which appears to be a farm.

Several buildings and a camper were reportedly damaged but it’s unclear whether any of the structures are houses.

It’s unclear what sparked the blaze but crews are looking into whether railroad tracks running next to the property may have sparked the dry grass.

Witnesses reported hearing loud explosions at the scene and fire crews said exploding propane tanks were a concern.

No injuries were reported.
