WINNIPEG – The Edmonton Oilers (26-35-7) handed the Winnipeg Jets (27-33-5) their fourth loss in their last five games with a 2-1 doubling at MTS Centre on Sunday.

The win is Edmonton’s fourth in its past five games and moves them into a tie with Winnipeg for third last in the league at 59 points.

Both teams sat scoreless until the 5:25 mark of the second period when Taylor Hall connected with Patrick Maroon for a one-timer. Maroon pounded in the pass from Winnipeg’s doorstep for his sixth goal of the season.

The Jets replied less than a minute later as Blake Wheeler fed Mark Scheifele for the equalizer. Scheifele has now scored six times in his last three games. He also leads Winnipeg with 21 goals this season. The Jets had a chance just a few seconds later to jump in front off a two-on-one but Alexander Burmistrov couldn’t beat Oilers goalie Cam Talbot. Instead, it was Edmonton who took a 2-1 lead into the intermission thanks to Lauri Korpikoski’s eighth of the year. The forward knocked a rebound past Ondrej Pavelec 16:20 into the period for the game winning goal.

Pavelec finished the night with 29 saves compared to Talbot’s 39.

Jacob Trouba had five shots, a hit and 19:54 of ice time in his return from an upper-body injury. The defenceman was a game time decision after missing Saturday’s 4-2 win over the Montreal Canadiens. With Trouba once again healthy, Winnipeg has sent Josh Morrissey back down to the AHL’s Manitoba Moose. The Jets’ top pick in the 2013 entry draft made his NHL debut against the Canadiens.

Sunday’s game marked the last time this season the Jets play twice in as many days. Including its loss to the Oilers, Winnipeg was 4-8 in the final game of back-to-backs in 2015-2016.

The Jets wrap up a five-game homestand on Tuesday against the Nashville Predators.
