7 of Scott Kelly’s awe-inspiring photos of our planet

While living in space for almost a year has its challenges, one of the best things is the view.

On Tuesday, NASA astronaut Scott Kelly returned from his One-Year Mission aboard the International Space Station (ISS) along with cosmonaut Mikhail Kornienko. While there, Kelly shared his view of our amazing planet on social media. Here’s seven of the most beautiful images of the place we call home.

The Bahamas

Kelly often tweeted about the beauty of this archipelago, a chain of more than 700 islands. Many astronauts often comment about the beautiful colours throughout the islands.

The vast colours of Earth

While we might think that Earth’s land consists of greens and browns, Kelly often tweeted photos of colours that would surprise you.

Northern lights

Here on Earth, we enjoy seeing the dancing colours of the northern lights. But up in space, the view is tremendous.

Our solar system

This photo is reminiscent of the famous image in 2001: A Space Odyssey of Earth and the moon. Kelly and the other astronauts enjoyed views of Mars, Jupiter and Venus — some of the brightest planets in our solar system.

Hurricanes

While Kelly was aboard the International Space Station, there were 12 Atlantic tropical storms and 31 Pacific storms. Hurricane Patricia was the strongest storm ever recorded in either the Atlantic or Pacific Oceans.

Our galaxy

Due to light pollution, most people have never seen the Milky Way in all its splendour. But up in space, there is no light pollution, affording a spectacular view of our galaxy.

The moon

Most of us take our moon for granted. In space, however, our closest companion can be part of a beautiful portrait of home.
