Female polar bear cub at Toronto Zoo named ‘Juno’

The Toronto Zoo’s new female polar bear cub has been named Juno.

The name was revealed at a media event on Thursday along with a sneak peek of the young cub in her polar bear maternity area and outside den.

Mother bear Aurora, gave birth to two cubs on Nov. 11, but one of the cubs died less than 24 hours later.

As she was born on Remembrance Day, the name was chosen to remember the successful operation carried out by Canadian soldiers on Juno Beach in Normandy, France on D-Day.

Juno was also named a honourary member of the Canadian Forces.

The public can visit the new bear beginning Saturday, Feb. 27, which is International Polar Bear Day.
