MONTREAL – In case you thought it was over, Mother Nature wanted to remind us all that winter is sticking around just a little bit longer.
About five centimetres of light snow covered roads and sidewalks in Montreal Wednesday morning, making it a tough drive for commuters.
By the afternoon, snow turned into freezing rain and slushy, uncleared sidewalks made for an unpleasant walk for pedestrians.
“It’s horrible for the feet,” one Montrealer told Global News.
“Oh my God, I feel like I don’t have any boots working for this kind of weather, so it’s horrible for that, but unfortunately we’re used to it.”
The messy weather also caused power outages — Hydro Quebec customers in parts of the West Island and Laval lost power at some point Wednesday evening.
Hydro had warned customers that weather conditions could lead to outages and that they were monitoring the situation.
Most flights in and out of Montreal’s Trudeau Airport were either cancelled or delayed.
“I don’t see winter being over soon but with the mild temperatures — little shots here and there — reminding us that we live in Canada isn’t such a bad idea,” said forecaster for Environment Canada Denis Thibodeau.
It seems like the wet weather will be sticking around.
Environment Canada said Montreal should expect about 10-15 millimetres on Thursday.
