Saskatchewan’s auditor says the province needs to do more to follow laws on pipeline construction and operations.
Bonnie Lysyk says the Ministry of Energy and Resources doesn’t have effective ways to ensure compliance with The Pipelines Act and regulations.

Lysyk says requirements are not being acted upon and that failure could harm people or the environment.
She says one problem is the ministry doesn’t collect enough information to know if pipelines are properly maintained or if operators can adequately respond to emergencies.
Energy and Resources regulates 1,700 licensed pipelines that span 23,500 kilometres.
There haven’t been any significant spills in recent years, but the auditor says pipelines are aging and one quarter of them are more than 40 years old.
