Mother of man killed in bar-fight reacts to not-guilty verdict

The mother mourning the loss of her teenaged son who was killed in a bar fight spoke with Global News in reaction to the verdict handed down to the man previously accused in his death.

On Tuesday, 25-year-old Jeremy Botelho was found not guilty of manslaughter. During the two-week trial, Botelho admitted to punching 18-year-old Kelly Clay in the face during a fight at the Norvilla Hotel in 2010. Botelho claimed it was self defense.

Clay hit his head on a concrete floor and died. A jury acquitted Botelho Tuesday. “I know accidents can happen, I do,” said Karen Clay, Kelly’s mother. “Do I believe he meant to kill him? No. But he did die though and to me there has to be some consequence. That’s all a life is worth? Nothing?”
