MONTREAL – A man is dead after he was struck by a Canadian Forces military vehicle on Highway 10 near Carignan Saturday morning.
The victim was a passenger on a bus that went off the road and ended up in a ditch in the median at 6:45 a.m.
After the bus veered off the highway, some of the passengers, stepped off the bus.
Police say that’s when the driver of the Canadian Forces vehicle lost control and fatally struck one of the passengers.
Sgt. Daniel Thibodeau with the Sûreté du Québec (SQ) told Global News that it appears the victim was walking near the side of the road when he was hit.
He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Five other people suffered minor injuries when the bus went off the road and one person was treated for shock after the fatal collision.
According to Sgt. Thibodeau, the passengers on the bus were all bus drivers with the Longueuil Transport Agency. They were heading to Lac-Megantic to take part in a group activity.
Highway 10 East is closed as officers investigate. A detour has been set up to accommodate traffic.
