Vancouver to hold first open house on future of viaducts today

VANCOUVER – The City of Vancouver will host the first of three open houses on the future of the Dunsmuir and Georgia viaducts today.

Today’s open house will be at the Woodward’s Atrium from 4-7 p.m.

The concept that will be presented at the open houses considers a number of possibilities for the two structures and road network. It incorporates ideas from last fall’s re:CONNECT competition, which challenged the public to come up with creative ideas for remaking the viaducts. The plan was developed by a city planners and engineering staff, along with transportation and structural consultants.

The viaducts – two elevated roadways connecting downtown Vancouver with the city’s eastern core – are remnants of a 1970s freeway system that was abandoned after public opposition.

The viaducts, critics argue, act as dividers between neighbourhoods and reduce the connectivity of the community below.
