SASKATOON – Horse lovers are saddling up for the fifth annual Saskatchewan Equine Expo at Prairieland Park from Feb. 12 to 14.

“Last night we probably had 800 to 900 people in here for the Equine Extravaganza. It’s just been fabulous, the weekend so far has been amazing,” said Lori Cates, agriculture manager at Prairieland Park.

Over 9,000 people are expected to take part in the three-day expo, which includes educational seminars, demonstrations, competitions and a trade show.

“It’s the only event in Saskatchewan that is like this. We have all disciplines of competitors,” Cates said.

“It’s all-encompassing this event.”

Derek Bloski, general manager of Early’s Farm and Garden Centre, said the expo provides an opportunity for people to get expert opinions on products.

“We bring our industry experts or our professionals in from the number of different companies that we carry their products lines in the store. It’s really good because it allows them to interact directly with the consumer,” Bloski said.

The sheer size and diversity of the expo is getting international attention.

“People are coming from everywhere, no exaggeration actually, I dealt yesterday with a customer here from California. So it’s quite interesting to see this show has obviously gotten some legs or some notice around the country and obviously outside of the country,” Bloski said.

University of Saskatchewan veterinary students are also involved in the expo, providing live demonstrations and educational activities for youth.

The expo will continue to run Sunday with competition finals and awards in the evening.
