RCMP have now laid charges against a man following an assault on a woman in Surrey Sunday night.

Kris Kelly, a 22-year-old male from Surrey, has been charged with attempted murder, aggravated sexual assault and unlawful confinement.

The victim was rushed to hospital after she was reportedly found in an apartment tied up and bleeding heavily from her neck, arms and wrists.

Surrey RCMP say the victim suffered “significant but non-life-threatening injuries.”

The outcome could have been different if not for the quick actions of Adel Masoud and his two sons.

“It was scary and strange but I thank God we arrived at the right time,” Masoud said.

Masoud, who manages the apartments above Surrey’s Middle Eastern Friendship Centre, received a call at home from a tenant who reported hearing yelling from next door. Masoud and his sons went to the building, located in the 13400-block of 108 Avenue.

They arrived to find a 21-year-old woman screaming.

“She ran from downstairs with her hand tied in the front,” he said.

“She was shouting, ‘911, he wants to kill me. 911, he wants to kill me.”

Masoud’s sons called 911 and stayed by the victim’s side while Masoud held the main door of the apartment building shut so the suspect didn’t escape.

“She’s naked from [the waist] down, there were no clothes on her,” Masoud said. “She was bleeding a lot.”

Witnesses say it took two hours before the suspect emerged from his suite.

“I’m so happy she’s OK,” Masoud said.
