EDMONTON- Hundreds of athletes from around the province descended on the Edmonton Expo Centre this weekend for the annual Edmonton Floor Hockey Tournament.
The event is an opportunity for athletes to get some final training in before the national competition next month in Corner Brook, Newfoundland.
“Tournaments are a really great social gathering for athletes to engage with each other and it’s a opportunity for coaches to see what other coaches are doing,” said Celina Comeau, a Volunteer Coordinator with Special Olympics Edmonton.
“Athletes are all about the competition and, as you can see, there’s some pretty good competition going on here.”
Ninety-five athletes from Alberta will head to the Special Olympics Canada Winter Games. The national competition serves as a qualifier for the 2017 World Games in Austria.
This year, the Edmonton Cougars and Calgary Roughnecks will compete for gold at the national competition.
