The brown hat, the red serge, and the black horse – these are three things that come to mind when you mention the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. The story of the force’s creation is celebrated here in Regina at the RCMP Heritage Centre.
May 27th was RCMP Heritage Centre’s 5th birthday. The theme of the event was “Horses of the Force”. The theatre showed a special video called “Eed Serge – Black Horses.”
Bianca Currie-Poirier with the Centre explains, “When the march west first started, it was driven by horseback because it was the 1880’s. Now when you look at the Musical Ride its recognized the world over. It’s almost like it is the RCMP largest PR tool.”
Currie-Poirier says interest in the Centre has grown over the years. “We’re pretty popular. We have school groups that come through here all the time. We have a great relationship with retired members and veterans, they are always coming though and checking us out and volunteering.”
The popularity of the RCMP reflects the importance of the Heritage Centre.
RCMP Cadet Sam Smith says, “The heritage museum contains or history and the one thing that sets RCMP apart from every other police force in the world, is our tradition and it’s a rich tradition. Even now, just talking about the history, I get chills and I think this building is important because it lets the public know why we do what we do.”
