Police standoff in Camrose resolved peacefully

 Police arrested a 32-year-old man who was wanted on a number of offences following a tense standoff in Camrose Wednesday night.Officers had been asking people to stay away from the 7-11 on 48 Avenue at about 4 p.m. on Wednesday afternoon after a member of the public reported seeing the wanted man in a van outside the convenience store.They said a situation was unfolding and the public might be at risk.Police said officers saw the suspect had a handgun and asked him to get out of the van but he did not comply.

 Around 6 p.m., officers said the man tossed out the handgun and surrendered peacefully to officers with Camrose Police Services..William Joseph Sheppard, wanted for numerous charges including breach of probation, uttering death threats and violation of an emergency protection order, is now in RCMP custody.RCMP told Global News a members of the public had reported spotting Sheppard at the West Edmonton Mall on Tuesday and again on Wednesday before he was reported to be seen in Camrose.No injuries were reported.
