Oklahoma police are looking for a driver accused of stealing a trailer last Friday, which then came loose during the robbery and slammed into a school bus packed with students.

Sand Springs Police said the trailer went veering into the path of the school bus because the thief used bungee cords to secure the trailer to the truck.

“The receiver end was too big for the ball,” said Captain Todd Enzbrenner. “They had it bungee corded, trying to rig it up there the best way they could. That’s why it didn’t stay.”

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

The bus was equipped with a pair of cameras, which caught footage of the entire incident.

“You can see in the video he kinda slows down a little bit as he’s passing the bus, and then he takes back off,” said Enzbrenner.

The video shows a white dually Ford pick-up truck heading towards the bus before the trailer comes free.

“There’s no way he didn’t know that didn’t come off,” said Enzbrenner.

A second camera reveals the rear of the truck, and captures a missing tailgate and a white license plate with black numbering.

Enzbrenner said the plates were definitely not from Oklahoma, but could have been from Texas.

“We haven’t been able to find a truck that matches that description yet though.”

The trailer, which was taken a close distance from where the accident occurred, was reported stolen shortly after the crash happened.

Paramedics examined one student involved in the accident, but no one was seriously injured.
