One woman in Australia won’t have to go very far to find the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow.
She recorded what appears to be a rainbow that started and ended in her backyard.
“Lottery tickets bought!” Burpengary, Australia resident Nicky Sturgess wrote when posting the video to the Higgins Storm Chasing Facebook page Monday.
“This happened in our backyard at Burpengary this afternoon.”
The science behind this mini-rainbow is relatively simple – in fact, there’s a chance you’ve seen or even created a backyard rainbow of your own at some point.
Rainbows form at an angle of 42 degrees. This means that to capture the phenomenon seen above, the sunlight must have been at an angle of 42 degrees to her backyard. The raindrops refract the sunlight, producing the rainbow as it separates the different colours of white light.
It’s the same thing that happens when you turn on a sprinkler in your backyard and notice a small rainbow appearing in the droplets.
The rainbow formed after a series of powerful storms, believed responsible for the death of at least one resident, wreaked havoc on Australia’s Gold Coast over the weekend.
In addition, over 20,000 people across the Queensland area lost power according to local media reports.
