MONTREAL – Desperate parents, some with tents, lined up outside Royal Vale Elementary School all weekend in the hopes of getting one of the 25 coveted spots for next year’s kindergarten class.

Following sibling registration week, only 25 spots were left for new families hoping to register their child at the Notre-Dame-de-Grâce public school.

Although registration for new students in the English Montreal School Board (EMSB) started Monday, some parents were lining up as early as Sunday at 6 a.m.

“It’s a great school,” said one mother.

“We know lots of people who have been here, and they only say good things.”

Another parent, David, told Global News that Royal Vale is one of the most reputed English schools in Montreal and that’s why he doesn’t mind the wait.

Though winter camping may not be everyone’s cup of tea, parents weren’t complaining.

“We’re lucky,” David said.

“Last year, apparently with the wind, it was -37 degrees or something like that.”
