ELMWOOD PARK, N.J. — Police say a raccoon jumped on a 6-year-old and attacked him as he walked to school with his mother in northern New Jersey.
A witness told officers the animal ran across the street, jumped on the boy’s back and crawled onto his face Wednesday morning.
Police Chief Michael Foligno tells The Record newspaper a man ran over and grabbed the raccoon before beating the animal to death with a stick.
Foligno says the child was taken to a hospital with deep cuts.
Bergen County Animal Control will have the animal tested for rabies. The results are expected on Friday.
