Campers on edge after body discovered in Waterton

A cloud of mystery remains over Waterton Lakes National Park this weekend after Friday’s grisly discovery of a body floating face-down in the water near Cameron Bay.

“A canoeist had spotted the body, notified us, the body was subsequently removed from the waterway,” says Cpl. Lorne Gopp of the Pincher Creek RCMP.

The victim is only being identified as a 23-year-old Lethbridge woman and believed to have just moved to Waterton for work at a hotel in the area.

Mounties are still trying to determine the circumstances surrounding the death.

Those in town for the weekend say they don’t expect to take any extra precautions around the water, though.

“You always have to be careful around the lake, it’s quite cold, there are some waves, but not really, not any more than usual,” says one Calgary resident.

Despite police presence over the two days, many campers Global News spoke to were unaware anything had even happened on the lake, as there’s little evidence of any investigation at all.

RCMP have yet to confirm if foul play was involved in the incident, but it’s leaving mixed feelings among tourists.

“Nothing like that has happened in Waterton. You never know, Calgary is creeping on us,” says a Crowsness Pass resident.

RCMP expect to know more about what may have happened on the water… after an autopsy which is scheduled for Tuesday.

Anyone with information on the death is asked to contact Pincher Creek RCMP.
