It’s another casualty of the elimination of the penny.
Saskatoon transit will no longer accept pennies in its fare boxes as of Saturday, May 26th.
Transit officials say slots that currently accept pennies are being reprogrammed to accept the new loonies and toonies that began circulating last month.

Fare boxes have a limited number of slots and can only recognize 12 different types of coins.
Pennies will cease to be used for cash transactions this fall after the federal government announced in its March budget production of the penny will end due to the increasing cost to produce the coin.
The last one-cent coin was minted on May 4th.
