SASKATOON – A traffic advisory has been issued reminding motorists to reduce speeds while icy road conditions continue. Since 5:30 a.m. CT on Tuesday, Saskatoon police have responded to 44 collisions.

One person was taken to hospital for observation after being struck by a vehicle while he was assisting another motorist on the side of the road.

Police say Circle Drive is of particular concern due to higher speeds of travel. Officials are encouraging motorists to reduce their speeds, leave extra space between vehicles and allow for additional time to reach destinations.

Officers were at the scene of a nine-vehicle crash that occurred at around 4 p.m. CT in the eastbound lanes of Circle Drive, south of Warman Road. One person was taken to hospital with unknown injuries.

The City of Saskatoon says around four centimetres of light snow fell overnight. Snow mixed with cold temperatures has resulted in ice crystals settling on the roadway and winds have contributed to winter driving conditions that are more slippery than normal.

Currently, 14 city sanders and plows are clearing and de-icing Circle Drive and priority streets on a continual basis. All available equipment is expected to be on the road overnight.

For temperatures below -20 degrees, sanders use a combination sand and salt mixture blended with a magnesium chloride application for Circle Drive and priority 1 streets to enhance traction.

Motorists are asked to watch for slower-moving civic vehicles on the road, day or night. Drivers should stay back at least 15 metres or about 2.5 car lengths behind equipment and approach slowly when passing.

Residents can report icy spots to public works at 306-975-2476.
