Footage of a baby elephant being threatened with physical violence in Thailand has sparked outrage after the tourist who recorded the incident published the video online.
Facebook user Charley Costin, a native of Gold Coast, Australia, claims she and Dani Tawha went to the Damnoen Saduak Elephant Village recently after their boat tour ended.
The video Costin posted Wednesday had been watched nearly 450,000 times at the time of writing. It shows Tawha interacting with a baby elephant when a young boy appears to get ready to punch the elephant — who immediately cowers at the site of a fist.
Costin could be heard questioning the boy as he stood beside the elephant.
“I was in absolute disgust,” Costin’s Facebook post read. “I stopped filming and continued to question and tell this little insignificant bully of a boy to stop.”
Costin later indicated that animal rights groups had been alerted and were moving to act.
Costin later explained to the social media verification service Storyful the boy eventually kicked the elephant to chain him up. That moment was not recorded and can’t be verified by Global News.
A petition has since been setup by Rita Claessens Elephant Freedom Fighters.
As for Costin, her feelings can be summed up in one sentence.
“This is why we don’t go to zoos!” she exclaimed.
