Not even a year after it welcomed in the youth of Saint John, Safe Harbour is closing its doors.
The housing facility cites lack of funding in a release explaining their decision to close.
“Safe Harbour, which opened in March 2015,is no longer in a financial position to maintain operations,” it reads.
“Layoff notices have been given to staff, and alternative housing plans are being developed for the young people currently staying at the facility.”

Safe Harbour provides a safe place for homeless youth in Saint John. Equipped with 10 beds, the $1.2 million facility provided emergency and transitional housing for youth.
Opening in March of 2015, the home was intended to help as many as 200 homeless youth living in the city. It sits on land that was donated from the Anglican church, which also made a significant donation to the project.
“We are very disappointed to have to take this step. We will continue to work with stakeholders and funders to resolve this difficult situation, and sincerely hope to be able to reopen the facility in future,” the Safe Harbour Board of Directors said in the release.
When it opened, Safe Harbour hoped it would not only be a safe place for Saint John youth, but also for young people from across the province.
