A “code burgundy” has been issued for Victoria Hospital in Prince Albert, Sask. Prince Albert Parkland Health Region issued it on Jan. 4 to deal with inpatient overcapacity.

One of the reasons for the region issuing the code burgundy is that the emergency department is overwhelmed.

Under the code burgundy, people with life-threatening conditions or serious health concerns will be seen first. Those with non-urgent injuries or illness could experience significant wait times before seeing a doctor.

Officials are urging people with a non-emergency to avoid the emergency department and to instead contact their family doctor or go to a walk-in clinic.

People can also call the HealthLine at 811 to get answers to health concerns.

Health officials said it’s not known when the code burgundy will be lifted.
