KIRKLAND – The town of Kirkland is scheduled to hold a register that could decide whether a plan to develop the old Merck-Frosst industrial site will proceed.

The development is controversial among residents in the area.

“This project will negatively impact our neighbourhood, our property evaluations,” said Cherine Cheftechi.

After it’s rezoned, the former Merck site is slated to be developed into a complex of more than 300 residences and could include other residential services to cater to the new homes.

Town officials are in favour of the rezoning and development plan.

“The town has expressed its opinions to residents expressing the benefits of the project,” said Joe Sanalitro, Kirkland town manager.

The register will be open until 7 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 7.

It needs 125 signatures to trigger a referendum.
