Calgary man arrested in sexual assault, confinement, choking of woman in parkade stairwell

A Calgary man has been arrested in relation to a violent sexual assault that left a woman severely injured in a city parkade stairwell last Sunday.

Andy Dick Ntunaguza, 30, was arrested downtown late Tuesday night and charged with aggravated sexual assault, forcible confinement, and overcome resistance by choking.

Officers were called to a parkade in the 200 block of 6 Avenue S.W. at around 3:45 a.m. on Sunday by security guards. The guards had found a woman who had been severely beaten and sexually assaulted in one of the parkade’s stairwells.

“It’s alleged the woman met her attacker around 3 Street and 7 Avenue S.W., and agreed to go with him to meet a friend,” police said Wednesday. “After meeting the friend, the group dispersed, with the suspect and victim continuing to the stairwell where the woman was beaten and sexually assaulted.”

The woman, in her 40s, was seriously injured and transported to hospital at the time.

“Physically, she will recover but she’s in rough shape,” Calgary Police Staff Sgt. Bev Voros said earlier this month.

Ntunaguza remained in custody Wednesday afternoon, and is set to appear in court Jan. 4.
