Until earlier this week, actor Nicolas Cage was in possession of a stolen Tyrannosaurus skull, which was technically the property of the Mongolian government.

Cage bought the skull at a Beverly Hills auction for $276,000 (beating out an also-vying Leonardo DiCaprio) in 2007.
Alex Schack, one of Cage’s publicists, said that the actor received a certificate of authenticity from the auction house and was first contacted by the Department of Homeland Security in July 2014, when they told him that the skull might be stolen.

After investigators discovered that the skull was taken illegally from Mongolia, Cage agreed to surrender it.
Neither the actor nor the auction house have been accused of being involved in the thievery.
