A man has been charged with assaulting a peace officer in connection with a violent incident at the Leduc courthouse on Tuesday.

RCMP said the attack unfolded when a woman “became disruptive” in a courtroom and the presiding judged ordered an Alberta sheriff to remove her from the courthouse.

When the sheriff tried to escort the woman, he was allegedly assaulted by a relative of hers.

Mounties said other sheriffs stepped in and took the suspect into custody while the sheriff who was attacked was taken to hospital and treated for minor injuries before being released.

Gene Hum was arrested and is now charged with assaulting a peace officer, disturbing the peace, and obstruction.

Hum has since been released from custody and is scheduled to appear in Leduc Provincial Court on Feb. 4, 2016.
