Nanaimo school trustee apologizes after making obscene gesture at parents

The actions of a Nanaimo school trustee are in question tonight after a run-in with a group of parents over the weekend.

A photo that popped up on social media appears to show school board chairman Steve Rae making an obscene gesture.

Rae was among the trustees who recently voted to close Nanaimo’s Rutherford School.

At a Christmas party on Friday, a group of parents ran into Rae and words were exchanged. A photo showing Rae with middle fingers raised later appeared on social media.

The prospect of a school board chair “flipping the bird” at parents does not sit well with some.

“Just two days or three days after the vote, he’s out in public displaying these offences directly towards Rutherford parents,” said parent Erin Volen. “That comes as a shock given his position.”

In a statement to Global News, Rae said:

“I was not the first to act inappropriately that evening and there are many witnesses that can attest to this. This does not excuse my actions and for them I feel deep remorse.”

The board also issued a statement saying that what is being said online does not match what they’re hearing from witnesses, adding that they consider this to be an internal board matter. If anyone has information or wants to file a complaint about the incident, they have to go the board.
