Downtown Edmonton stabbing sends one man to hospital with serious injuries

EDMONTON – One man is in hospital suffering from life-threatening injuries after being stabbed near 106 Ave. and 107 St. Sunday afternoon.

It happened around 1 p.m. Police say a group of area residents were seated drinking beer when a man walked past them, and words were exchanged. The man left after being allegedly shoved, and returned with a friend. A fight then ensued, which left two people of the original drinking party injured.

One of them, a man in his 30s or 40s, suffered serious injuries and was rushed to hospital. The other victim, a woman also of about the same age, suffered minor injuries.

Police believed at least one long-bladed weapon, such as a machete or samurai sword, was involved.

They are still looking for the suspects who fled the scene on foot.

The suspects are described as North African males with short hair in their 20s to 30s.

“Our initial understanding is that (the suspects and victims) are not known to each other,” says Staff Sgt. Malcolm Allan. “It was a simple exchanging of words where I don’t know if it’s egos or pride that escalates something that gets out of control.”

Anyone with information relating to the incident is asked to call police.
