On The Road: The eve of the Grey Cup

Practices are now over – all that’s left is Sunday’s Grey Cup Final.

Saturday morning, the Eskimos went through their final walk-through of the Grey Cup week. They were feeling pretty relaxed. In fact, Odell Willis did a “Lambeau Leap” into the stands where a handful of Eskimos fans were on hand to watch the walk-through. They were loud and already cheering, so you can imagine what the atmosphere will be like at Investors Group Field on Sunday afternoon.

The Eskimos are doing everything in their power to treat this as any other game. Quarterback Mike Reilly plans to get some sleep Saturday night and won’t even set an alarm.

He’ll wake up early, have breakfast, watch a bit of game tape in his hotel room before having another bite to eat before kickoff. He’s focused on hoisting the Grey Cup high above his head and wants to do it for the City of Edmonton.

One area of concern, however, is the footballs used in Sunday’s game. According to Eskimos’ kicker Sean Whyte, the league has decided to introduce new footballs for the kicking teams. Whyte describes the footballs as “slick” and is confused as to why the league would introduce this in the biggest game of the year.

With that said, Eskimos Head Coach Chris Jones doesn’t quite share the same concern.

“It’s like the rain, if it rains on one side, it rains on the other,” Jones said in a news conference.

And as always, the Spirit of Edmonton room is the place to be. The feeling in the room was electric as fans from all teams gathered for a good time and a great night of dancing. Speaking of the fans, let’s just say there are quite the number of characters that make their way to Grey Cup festivities.
