The Brunswick House could soon become a Boston Pizza

TORONTO — A legendary watering hole in the Annex neighbourhood could be closing its doors to make way for a popular restaurant chain.

The Brunswick House, also known as “The Brunny”, has been the bar of choice for many university students over the years — but also has a reputation for rowdy patrons.

“I’ve received more complaints about this one building and it’s over serving of alcohol,” the chair of the Harbord Village Residents Association Tim Grant said. “Neighbours hearing screaming matches in front of their houses at 3 in the morning and vomiting.”

The owner of the building at the corner of Brunswick Avenue and Bloor Street West has terminated the pub’s lease and the tenant will remain on a month-by-month basis beyond Dec. 31.

Discussions with Boston Pizza about moving in have prompted a community meeting on Monday to speak with nearby residents about a proposal to add a patio to the side of the building.

The historic building proudly shows off its storied past, with the year 1876 displayed on the front facade.

Its location west of the University of Toronto’s St. George campus has made it convenient for students to frequent as patrons over time.

“It’s pretty popular among U of T students,” third-year student Brandon Langevin said. “I’m sure there’s going to be a few disappointed fans and a lot of happy ones.”

Online reaction has been mixed with those ready to say goodbye and other remembering the days of old.

Indications are the premises would be refurbished with the restaurant taking over the main floor while the upper floors are converted into office space.
