Edmonton cracks down on drivers illegally parking in disabled stalls

A Facebook post has gone viral after highlighting the issue of finding parking when living with a disability.

EDMONTON – Drivers are being reminded that accessible parking stalls are only for those with proper parking permits.

The City of Edmonton is spreading the message during its Accessible Parking Awareness Week from Monday to Friday.

“Accessible parking stalls are a necessity, not a privilege, for people with disabilities,” said Mayor Don Iveson.

“Together we can help protect our most vulnerable citizens by leaving accessible parking stalls for individuals who need them.”

Ten thousand tickets have been handed out over the past three years to people who have parked illegally in disabled parking stalls. The fine is $250 and the vehicle could be towed and impounded.

“With the holiday season approaching, I would like to thank and continue to encourage all citizens of Edmonton to be mindful of where they park in the coming months,” said Zachary Weeks, Edmonton Accessibility Advisory Committee.

“With the transition we are currently seeing as our baby boomers get older and winter safety a factor for everyone, the availability of wheelchair accessible parking stalls are at a premium.”

Parking permits for people with disabilities are issued by Alberta Transportation.
