Habitat for Humanity looking for pennies

Habitat for Humanity is looking for pennies –ten million to be exact.

The agency is hoping to collect the pennies to help build a new home for a Saskatoon family.

10-million pennies would be worth $100,000, enough to cover the cost of bricks and mortar to build the new home.

“Ten million pennies will form a six foot, by six foot, by six foot cube – and will weigh 55,000 lbs and if the pennies were stacked one on top of the other they would reach 9.8 miles high,” said Habitat Saskatoon executive director Barb Cox-Lloyd.

“This will be a lot of work, but if we can help another hard-working, low-income family get into home-ownership it will be more than worth it.”

Cox-Lloyd said the idea for the penny drive came from Habitat Regina and makes sense as production of the penny will end this fall and will give people a chance to donate unneeded pennies.
