Okanagan dancers audition for Canada’s National Ballet School

KELOWNA – It was a big day on Tuesday, November 10 for some Okanagan dancers who auditioned for a spot at Canada’s National Ballet School in Toronto.

Dancers from grades five to 12 showed their skills off to a panel of judges in Kelowna.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

Staff with the ballet school tour the country watching more than one thousand dancers but only about 150 can make the cut.

That’s why each hopeful is tested for a variety of skills.

“We would like to see that they can move with ease and bounce rhythmically and light and high with the music and we are also then having a look at their flexibility and mobility,” says Deborah Bowes, Senior Ballet Teacher at Canada’s National Ballet School.

Several Okanagan dancers have been recruited by the school in past years. Candidates from this audition will be notified of their success in the spring.
