Alberta adding $170M for water projects

EDMONTON – A representative for Alberta’s small communities says an infusion of cash for water projects will help.

But Al Kemmere, head of the Alberta Association of Municipal Districts and Counties, says more help is needed given the high costs of water infrastructure.

The province announced in the budget that it’s investing an extra $170 million over the next five years to upgrade and build water and wastewater projects in small communities.

Overall, the province is spending $706 million on such projects over the same time period.

Infrastructure Minister Brian Mason agrees there is, in his words, “a significant deficit” for all capital projects in Alberta.

Mason notes that one wastewater plant in Nanton that is receiving money was in such desperate shape, it was using boards tied together with baling wire.
