Halifax OKs plastic bags for leaf collection after paper bag shortage

Orange or clear plastic bags (like these!) can now be used for leaf disposal in Halifax. Rebecca Lau/Global Halifax

HALIFAX – The city of Halifax says residents can put leaves in clear and orange plastic bags for disposal, effective immediately.

The rules for leaf disposal were changed effective August 1st, when new garbage and recycling amendments took effect. Those rules said excess leaf and yard waste was supposed to be placed at the curbside in paper bags only, but the program was so successful, retailers were having a hard time keeping up with demand.

Many residents resorted to using plastic bags, only to have rejection stickers placed on them during weekly collection.

The municipality plans to reintroduce the requirement to use only paper bags for leaves and yard waste in the spring of 2016. They say this will allow retailers the time to maintain an adequate supply of bags for sale in the region.
