Former Olympic rower Harold Backer is still missing from his Victoria home.
The Victoria Police Department said the 52-year-old was last seen on Tuesday, Nov. 3. He told his family he was going for a bicycle ride, but never returned. Police said a man closely matching Backer’s description was seen leaving Victoria on the Coho ferry that day. Officials did contact the Port Angeles Police Department, where the ferry docks, but Backer has not been found.
“Investigators look at everything about a person’s life when he or she is reported missing,” said Cst. Matt Rutherford with the Victoria Police. “If anyone has any information we need to hear from them directly. What matters is that he comes home safely to his family. Harold’s family needs to know that he is safe.”
Investigators continue to work with U.S. law enforcement agencies.
Backer is described as a 52-year-old Caucasian man, standing six feet, three inches tall with a medium build. His eyes are green and he has greying hair. He is believed to be wearing a red cycling jersey, black riding pants, possibly carrying a black backpack and could be riding his black Cannondale road bike.
He rowed for Canada in the 1984, 1988 and 1992 Summer Olympic Games.
If you see Harold Backer, you are asked to call 911. If you have any information you are asked to call (250) 995-7654.
