CALGARY – Katrina Jabs had committed to performing “O Canada” at a Remembrance ceremony Tuesday, and she wasn’t going to let a nasty case of strep throat get in the way.
The 11-year-old Calgarian sang at the “No Stone Left Alone” ceremony at the Burnsland Cemetery.
The tributes also included 800 students laying poppies on every one of the military headstones.
The Jabs family had a personal connection with one of Calgary’s fallen soldiers.
Katrina’s dad, Rob, was close friends with Cpl. Mike Starker, who was killed in an ambush in 2008 while serving as a medic in Afghanistan.
Katrina is proud to honour Starker’s memory by singing the anthem at the ceremony.
“I kind of feel emotional every single Remembrance Day when I look at his grave, and I look at the sacrifices he made,” she said. “He chose to go and fight for us, and now he gone and we have to remember him.”
