Plans for another pedestrian bridge in Calgary

There’s talk of constructing another pedestrian bridge in Calgary’s downtown core.

The Calgary Municipal Land Corporation is putting its plan for the Elbow River pedestrian bridge to the planning commission, this week.

It would be built just north of the current 9th Avenue bridge, connecting Fort Calgary with Inglewood.

That proximity has some users questioning if it’s really needed.

Even the mayor needs some clarification.

“I need to be convinced that the small traverse across the Elbow River is needed to make the Riverwalk work, and that the existing bridge can’t fulfill that mandate,” said Naheed Nenshi.

Meanwhile the CMLC says the project is needed.

“I truly get where Calgarians are coming from, but the assumption you’re making is that the 9th Avenue Bridge works for pedestrians and bicycles. But the feedback we’ve got – and it has been significant – is that it doesn’t work,” says Michael Brown, CMLC.

CMLC has set aside $3-Million for the bridge.

The money would come from the revitalization and development of the East Village.

It’s also possible the City could reuse an old bridge it currently has in storage.
