Michael Friisdahl of Air Canada named new MLSE president and CEO

TORONTO – Air Canada executive Michael Friisdahl will be named the new president and CEO of Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment.

The president and chief executive officer of Air Canada Leisure Group, which operates the company’s tour business, Air Canada Vacations and its new low-cost airline, will replace the outgoing Tim Leiweke.

“As both an entrepreneur and a C-level executive in consumer-facing businesses at the Canadian and international level, Michael has shown an unwavering commitment to delivering for the customer,” said Larry Tanenbaum, Chairman of MLSE in a media release.

“His focus will be on supporting our fans and our teams while maximizing the potential of MLSE’s iconic sports, entertainment and real estate assets.”

According to Air Canada’s website, Friisdahl joined Air Canada in 2012 after holding the position of CEO of Thomas Cook North America.

Leiweke announced last year he was stepping down from his MLSE position to pursue other interests.

Leiweke joined MLSE in 2013 after serving as President and CEO of international sports and entertainment company Anschutz Entertainment Group. He reportedly agreed to a five-year contract.

MLSE owns and operates the NHL’s Maple Leafs, NBA’s Raptors and Toronto FC of Major League Soccer.
