Nintendo reports earnings amid rumours of an upcoming mobile game

Japanese video game maker Nintendo is allegedly planning to unveil its first game designed for smartphones.

According to a Wall Street Journal report, Nintendo will hold a press conference Thursday to announce the gaming app that would likely be released by the end of the year.

If true, the announcement would come just a day after the company reported weaker than expected financial results.

Nintendo Co. posted a 3.17 billion yen (US$26.3 million) profit for the fiscal second quarter, buoyed by sales growth of its Nintendo 3DS and Wii U home consoles. Sales were also buoyed by software titles such as Animal Crossing, which sold more than 2 million units.

In March, the company announced it had teamed up with Japanese mobile game company DeNA Co. to develop mobile games, fueling fan expectation for mobile games featuring characters like Super Mario and Pokemon. The announcement promised fans games developed especially for the smartphone experience – however, the company gave no hints as to what type of games might be in the works.
