Projet Montreal asks for public consultation into police body cameras

MONTREAL – The City of Montreal has come out saying it wants to address issues of racial profiling and police brutality by installing body cameras on its police officers.

But, opposition Projet Montreal insisted that fixed cameras on officers at all times with features like facial recognition technology could infringe on people’s privacy.

It is calling for a public consultation around the use of the cameras.

Montreal’s new police chief Philippe Pichet told Global News earlier this month that a pilot project to equip officers with body cameras is already in the works.

He acknowledged the privacy concerns, but said he’s hopeful everything will be ironed out during the pilot project.
