New Montreal police chief Philippe Pichet sworn in

WATCH ABOVE: Montreal’s police chief Philippe Pichet was sworn into service Friday at city hall.

MONTREAL – The city has a new police chief in Philippe Pichet.

He was sworn in at 2:30 p.m. at Montreal city hall Friday.

Pichet replaced Marc Parent, who stepped down after five years as police chief and a total of 31 years of service.

Montreal Mayor Denis Coderre recommended Pichet as his first choice of six potential candidates.

After making the announcement in July, Coderre added Pichet was “someone who is very professional.”

Pichet has been part of the force since the 1990s; he has held administrative positions related to anti-terrorism and operation planning since 2005.

He also played a critical role during the student protests in 2012.
