Federal election VS. Blue Jays has voters hitting the polls early

MONCTON – The attention of Maritime baseball fans will be torn tonight between following election results and a big battle on the mound.

The Toronto Blue Jays are back at home tonight for game three of a seven-game series against the Kansas City Royals.  The Jays lost the first two games against the Royals.

For Riverview’s Robin True it’s a real toss up about what he’s most excited about watching, his beloved Blue Jays or seeing the outcome of the federal race at the polls.

“It’s quite an opportunity for everybody to come together,” he said about the Jays game.

True has been a die-hard Jays fan since before the team won the world series in ’93.

“Yup, Joe Carter’s walk off home run against the Philadelphia Phillies,” said True.

But True says he is also truly passionate about politics. So, he hopes big plans for tonight’s game won’t discourage Jays fans from hitting polling stations across the country.

“You have to have that opportunity to see who is going to be able to lead the country for the next four years so it’s important to have your say.”

The polls close at 8:30 p.m. Atlantic Time across the Maritimes, so True says, “You got lots of time you still have a half hour after the polls close to settle in for the ball game.” which starts a 9 p.m. AT.

According to Elections Canada, voter turnout at the advanced polls was up 71 per cent this year over the 2011 election, and True believes that people truly are more engaged this year.

“There was a higher voter turnout at the advanced polls which will hopefully lead to a higher turn out today as well,” he said.

Christine Wyman cast her ballot early Monday to get it out of the way so she could get ready for the big game.

“The elections is a big one too so I do find it interesting that they fall on the same day,” says Wyman.

After all, True says whether you are talking baseball or politics, “it’s not over till it’s over.”
