Family of jailed N.B. potato farmer Henk Tepper thanks public for support

FREDERICTON – The family of a New Brunswick farmer accused of exporting rotten potatoes is thanking the public for their support, one year after he was detained in a Lebanese prison.

Henk Tepper has been in custody in Beirut since March 23 last year on an international arrest warrant over allegations that potatoes he exported to Algeria in 2007 were rotten.

Algeria also alleges that Tepper forged export documents, but his lawyers have denied all of the allegations.

In a statement, Tepper’s family says they have been able to remain strong due to the love and support of friends and strangers.

Diane Ablonczy, Canada’s minister of state for foreign affairs, says the government is working with its diplomatic partners and those efforts will continue until Tepper is returned home.
