Reports: Hewlett-Packard to combine printer and PC units as it tries to turn itself around

NEW YORK, N.Y. – Hewlett-Packard is combining its printing and PC units to save money, according to published reports.

The technology blog AllThingsD first reported the plan Tuesday citing anonymous sources.

The technology company has faltered recently. It said last month that it plans to spend several years turning itself around. Hewlett-Packard faces internal problems as well as competitive threats to its PC business from tablets and smartphones.

HP is the world’s No. 1 maker of personal computers. But consumers are buying fewer PCs in recent years as they increasingly turn their attention to tablets and smartphones.
