5 things to do in Toronto this weekend (Sept. 25-27)

With so many events in and around Toronto, it’s hard to keep track of what’s happening and what’s worth venturing out for. Here are five things worth doing in the city this weekend.

See a movie

Now that summer is over and it’s officially fall, there is no reason to feel guilty about sitting inside a movie theatre all weekend. If it’s a family-friendly outing you desire, Hotel Transylvania 2 is in theatres and is great for kids 6+ while also delivering lots of Adam Sandler-esque laughs that adults and teens will enjoy.

Everest, starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Robin Wright and Josh Brolin opens on more screens across the GTA this weekend and Johnny Depp’s Black Mass, which screened at TIFF to rave reviews, are both good picks for an adults-only night out.

If you want a more unique movie experience, the Bloor Cinema is hosting a Zoolander quote-along Saturday at 9:30 p.m., which is sure to be full of ridiculously good-looking people yelling out silly things.

Celebrate reading

The annual Word on the Street Festival takes over the Harbourfront Centre this Sunday, Sept. 27 from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. The free event includes author readings from the likes of Patrick deWitt and Kelley Armstrong, a kids tent, writing workshops, and much more. For more information, visit thewordonthestreet.ca.

Support Canadian crafters

Online craft shop Etsy is hosting 33 cross-country pop-up marketplaces this Saturday, Sept. 26 to support its Canadian community of sellers. Toronto is home to two marketplaces with one at the MaRS Discovery District (101 College St.) and another at OCAD University, where there will be an outdoor market at 100 McCaul St. and an indoor market at 49 McCaul St. Both locations run from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. For more info on the Etsy: Made in Canada events, visit etsy.com.

Have a laugh

Just For Laughs 42 kicked off Thursday and if you’re a fan of live comedy the lineup this weekend is stacked with some pretty heavy hitters. Gilbert Gottfried does his act Friday at 11 p.m., Daily Show host Trevor Noah performs Saturday at 7 p.m., Talking Dead host Chris Hardwick is on Saturday at 9:45 p.m. and Rachel Feinstein is doing double duty on Saturday and Sunday at 9 p.m. And that’s just a select few of the many great comedians performing! JFL42 runs until Oct. 3. To purchase tickets and to see the full schedule of performers, visit jfl42.com.

View the lunar eclipse (with lots of people)

The last total lunar eclipse visible from Toronto until 2019 happens this Sunday and to top it off it’s also going to be a “super moon” (find out what that means here). Instead of just standing outside looking up by yourself head to UofT at 8:30 p.m. and join the Total Lunar Eclipse Viewing Party at King’s College Circle. You’ll be able to look through UofT telescopes, speak with astronomers and learn how to photograph the moon properly. For more info on the Total Lunar Eclipse Viewing Party, visit the Facebook page for the event. The Royal Astronomical Society of Canada is hosting similar events in Richmond Hill and Mississauga.
