MONTREAL – Taxi drivers in Montreal are protesting UberX Wednesday as part of an international day of action against the ride sharing service.
Starting at 9:30 a.m., they formed a slow-moving convoy heading from the Montreal Technoparc to the Trudeau airport.

This may cause some traffic headaches for anyone heading to the West Island or to catch a flight.
Tension between Montreal’s taxi drivers and UberX has been on the rise since the company’s introduction in October 2014.
The taxi industry has called on the provincial government to crack down on the company, insisting that UberX provides an illegal service.

UberX drivers do not have to pay the same service fees as taxi drivers, such as permits, higher insurance and licence plate fees.

Quebec Premier Philippe Couillard had previously said he was open to the idea of legalizing UberX.
The taxi industry insisted the ride-sharing service affects not only those in Montreal, but all of Quebec because of how heavily the province relies on its taxes.
