Passenger dies in Montreal taxi collision

MONTREAL – A 23-year-old man is dead, after the taxi he was riding in smashed into a brick wall early Sunday morning.

The accident happened at 3:30 a.m. at the corner of Mont-Royal and Papineau.

According to Montreal police (SPVM), the taxi was heading east on Mont-Royal Avenue when the driver lost control of his vehicle.

The taxi apparently collided lightly with a car on Marquette and then hit a metal ramp on a restaurant patio before slamming into the brick wall of a bank.

One of the passengers was transported to hospital in critical condition and later died of his injuries.

The taxi driver, 65, and the 2nd passenger, 23, are both in hospital with minor injuries.

Police established a perimeter as collision experts tried to determine the sequence of events that led to the crash.

Roads were reopened to traffic at 8 a.m. but the investigation continues.
